Mentoring
|
Serving the greater New York tri-state region, this program is designed to encourage and support mutually beneficial, long-standing relationships between adult role models and children ages 7 to 18. Mentoring relationships enable children to grow emotionally and socially, build resilience and develop coping skills while encouraging them to make healthy choices. Mentors and children engage in community-based activities twice a month, for a minimum of one year. Events designed to encourage group dynamics, team building and community service are scheduled quarterly. To date, almost 200 children have participated in the Youth Mentoring Program.
Tuesday's Children identifies and recruits mentors through corporations, civic organizations and local media. All mentor candidates undergo thorough background and reference checks and, prior to being assigned, receive special training in childhood development and the stages of grief. The program was designed with the National Mentoring Partnership and Dr. Jean Rhodes, a widely published expert on youth mentoring and a consultant on the program.
|
63% of our mentoring matches exceed the minimum commitment of one year, which surpasses the national match length average.

Over 90% of children/adolescents who responded to our targeted survey indicated that they felt listened to and cared about by their mentor and that they had developed a caring and trusting relationship with their mentor.
|
Of the parents/guardians who responded to the survey, 97% reported that they believe the mentor provided a positive role model for their children. |

Become a Tuesday's Children Mentor!
Tuesday’s Children’s Mentoring program, as you know, has been tremendously successful and beneficial to so many. To date we have matched nearly 200 of our young people with committed and qualified mentors. There are currently four children waiting patiently to find dedicated adult role models in their local community, and we need your help to find them.
If we find these five mentors we will have met the needs of every child in the program!
Those waiting are:
- 13 year-old boy in Ocean, NJ (Would love a mentor who is young and active so they can play sports. His brother has had a mentor for over six years and while he loves spending time with them, he would love to have a dedicated mentor as well.)
- 10 year-old boy in Mullica Hill, NJ (Likes to play sports and is hoping to find a mentor he can confide in. He envies the tremendous relationship his brother has with his mentor and hopes to find a mentor of his own.)
- 10 year-boy in Middletown, NJ (His Mom stressed the need for a male influence in his life. He is a huge NY Giants fan and was recently featured in People Magazine. He loves to draw and is an aspiring cartoonist.)
- 10 year-old girl in Little Egg Harbor, NJ (Our first match within the First Responder Alliance. She would love a mentor who is active and in their 20s or 30s. She loves bike riding, singing, collecting special items, walking her two dogs and puzzles. She wants to tell her mentor about the time she met Justin Bieber!)
We match every volunteer with a child who lives within a 30-minute radius of the volunteer’s home or office. They are asked to make a commitment of visiting with the child twice a month for at least a year but hopefully longer. The screening process includes an in-person interview, reference checks, background screenings and trainings. We strive to support each match and will provide helpful tools and techniques as well as quarterly outings with other Tuesday’s Children matches.
