As part of the partnership between Warner Bros. Pictures and Tuesday’s Children, and in conjunction with the release of the Academy Award -nominated film Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, Warner Bros. Pictures and the film’s director, Stephen Daldry, arranged a benefit screening for donors and friends of Tuesday’s Children. The January 18th pre-release screening included a cocktail reception with VIP guests and thoughtful opening remarks from the film's Max Von Sydow.

Most importantly, however, and through the generosity of Warner Bros. and Daldry, Tuesday’s Children was able to provide private screenings of the film for our 9/11 families. The storyline of the movie follows the story of a young boy who lost his father on 9/11 and his journey to deal with his grief and loss. Close to 200 family members attended these private movie screenings. which afforded them the opportunity to support each other. Prior to the screening, Tuesday's Children advised family members that the film might evoke a wide range of emotions and relive past issues. Fran Furman, Director of Counseling, spoke with parents bringing children to view the movie to ensure that parents had a good understanding of the film’s impact and images. Ms Furman, as well as other mental health professionals was present at the screenings to provide support and families were offered the opportunity to share their thoughts and reactions to the film after the screening. The majority of families felt positively about being able to view the movie with other 9/11 family members in a private, safe space in which they could support each other.  Families also expressed hope that the movie would bring greater awareness to the community at large about the hardships and difficulties they had to face in the months and years following 9/11 and the impact it continues to have.

Other activities included learning to walk on stilts and performing routines on the trampoline. National Mentoring Month provides the opportunity for our mentoring matches to spend time together and to meet other matches while doing a team building activity. Internship and Job Workshop PDF Print E-mail
On January 5th, Tuesday's Children hosted the first of several seminars focused on Internship and Job Services.  The seminar started with a workshop given by John Hassett, Executive Recruiter with LinkedIn, titled "How to Best Use Social Media in your Job Search".   Young adults had the opportunity to learn how social media is impacting the workforce and how best to present yourself using this quickly growing job resource tool.  Karen McKenna, Founder of Career Vision and Author of Games2Careers, facilitated "Resumes that Get Results" which discussed the ins and outs of resume building from layout, to the details and what and what not to include.  The third seminar lead by Barbara Boschert, "Effective Interviewing Skills" helped participants learn how to ensure their knowledge, skills and abilities are effectively communicated during an interview.  After dinner and a networking session that included an introduction to the Logler Internship Program (http://www.niriny.org/internships.cfm), young adults regrouped for a panel featuring top executive recruiters.

From the survey Tuesday's Children teens completed, we learned the four top areas of career interest and used that to compile the panel.  The panel included professionals from Conde Nast, Dewey & LeBoeuf, LinkedIn, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and New York University Stern School of Business.  Fred Stroble, Executive Director of Human Resources, with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney lead an interactive discussion period.  One parent told us "This type of seminar and career related resources will definitely help these young people, especially in today's difficult job market."  And a young adult who joined us said "It was very helpful as a freshman to get advice about the job and internship search because now I feel like I’m a step ahead of my peers."  For more information on the Internship and Career Resource Center, please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
